The New Yorker's profile of Benny Goodman from 1937 says top improvisers are called "senders". The only mention of the word in scholarly publications refers to that very profile.
The word "cat" still lives on, but I've never heard anyone called a "sender" in my whole life.
Jazz fans are alligators, by the way. I am one.
