Well Eastwood had reformed a long time ago. It seems pretty clear that he wouldn't have taken the mission if it hadn't initially sounded chivalrous. I don't buy readings of that movie that revolve around determining one of the characters to be the unambiguous "bad guy."
I think Hackman gives the best performance in the movie and that is my favorite of his roles, although I wouldn't say that he "steals" the movie. I like Morgan Freeman alot in that one too. When was the last time he had a "character" role like that?
