understood how to work the Cold War paranoia into their music really well. The cavalcade of different synth sounds always makes these records very interesting to listen to if you're into that sort of thing and the overall mood is fascinating.
The early prog period is overthought music, the band trying too hard to imitate their influences and combine them together in a bunch of pieces but almost always failing to do so. A Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres are alright in places, but are very weak composition-wise. "La Villa Strangiato" and "Xanadu" are incoherent nothingness, the former not even having that interesting playing and the latter is simply a waste of time. Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures have fun singles but that's it. Everything after Roll the Bones and including it is straightaway awful.
