That I was 32/33 when I first saw it probably had something to do with not being all that terrifying. When I was in 7th grade or whatever it was the Blair Witch Project and that did scare the shit out of me (walking into that clearing with the wooden symbols freaked me out for some reason), and most people ate it up until the inevitable backlash (and the sequel) started. The Ring was in high school and I wasn't terrified, but stuff where basically innocent people meet their fates gets to me (as long g as it's not Final Destination or whatever.) Check out Aickman's (very) short story "The Cicerones" for a disturbing example (it's still under copyright but someone adapted it for a film I've never seen on YouTube), and "A Warning to the Curious" (public domain) by M.R. James, among many others.
