'Ellen wasn't cancelled because she came out, it was cancelled a few months later IIRC because ABC got sick of her being "too gay."'
Now that you mention it, I think I remember that but since I also haven't seen "Ellen" since it was originally broadcast, I'm unsure of how the level of gayness would compare to "The Ellen Show" and wouldn't be surprised if "Ellen" was barely gay at all after Ellen came out and the excuse you mentioned was just ABC's way of washing their hands of the whole thing. The mere fact that she had come out meant they were gonna keep getting hate mail regardless of the gayness level so they probably just got tired of it (and more importantly, the ratings probably slipped significantly enough to justify cancellation).
I have fond memories of "Roseanne" but would never rewatch the whole thing. Would prefer to pretend that whole "we won the lottery- or *did* we?!" final stretch never happened. The show was also distractingly amateurish at the very beginning (particularly Roseanne herself, not that she became a much better actress in later seasons). I'll probably rewatch some of the episodes on season 4 and based on how much I enjoy them, I might look into which other seasons may be worth revisiting.
I'm actually rewatching "The Venture Bros", one of the greatest shows ever and one that I can almost guarantee you'd like, possibly love, if you ever tried watching it. If AH were here, he'd say the same, only with more insults.
