I saw an early limited release, before the hype, before it was being called the scariest movie of all time and being compared to "The Exorcist" and all that. And before I really knew anything about it. Actually, when I first started watching, I thought it might be a real documentary (though I quickly realized that this wasn't the case). But anyway, it was among the horror films that actually scared me the most the first time I saw it, so I gotta give it props for that. But the hype really killed it (saw it for a second time in the theater a month or 2 later and someone audibly responded to the ending with "YAWN!") and the fact that it spawned the fake found footage horror subgenre probably didn't help its reputation either. But there were a few at the beginning that were pretty good, like "Cloverfield" and "Quarantine".
