I like MCIS fine as long as I can forget all the cruddy filler tunes like "Where Boys Fear To Tread," "Cupid De Locke," "Take Me Down" (one of the few songs that would be IMPROVED by Billy Corgan singing it!), "Stumbleine" etc. But that one was fairies and rainbows sadness, whereas Reznor was all Goth psycho nihilism.
And hey, that's just it--Reznor continues on The Fragile to be simultaneously the smartest and most musically talented man in alternative rock AND its most annoyingly broody. Yep, afraid he's got ol' Corg beaten in that dept.
Part of my reason for checking out The Fragile (it was originally going to be Starless And Bible Black) was that it's mentioned in Steven Hyden's Twilight Of The Gods as "the album that ends classic rock." For the life of me, I can't remember what Hyden said, and that was mostly a good read.
