And re: the whole martyr angle
That was somewhat unavoidable given everything I mentioned in my previous post but it was also largely due to the contents of Kurt's suicide note, which Courtney read aloud (most of it, anyway) to a crowd of fans at a public memorial shortly after his death. He talks about feeling guilty and like a phony (one line is something like "I felt like I should be punching a time clock every time I went onstage") and makes it seem like these were the main reasons he killed himself. He was obviously pretty ####ed up when he wrote it but maybe part of him was still thinking of his legacy or maybe it was just simple self deception. Because though these reasons definitely contributed, once you start reading about him, the real reason becomes crystal clear- he was generally an extremely unhappy person and his heroin habit had gotten about as severe as one can get w/o the addict ODing (which he did do shortly before his death, though I think it was on something else).
So it was only a matter of time. But the delicate rock star who kills himself when he's on top of the world because he can't handle fame makes for an enduringly romantic, almost poetic story. So it makes sense that the press and the public would be all over that. And though Courtney's judgement re: reading the suicide note to fans could be called into question, I can't really fault her too much. Seemed like some of that stuff was pretty much addressed to the fans and she was obviously emotional (she's a shitty person but I never believed that she had anything to do w/ his death) and wanted consolation/to share her grief. Also, that way she wouldn't have to deal w/ people asking about the suicide note and its contents for the rest of her life.
