Dr. No is a half-primitive setup carried by Connery alone, but Russia is one of the few Bond movies that has an actual sense of espionage to it. You didn't think Robert Shaw was a good enemy for Bond?

"lack of genuine wit or meaningful themes" - Fair enough, but who on Earth ever thought they were trying to have any? I certainly wouldn't want those entertaining films larded down with some nauseating Batman darkness about Bond's angst over his responsibilities, let alone the kind of "seriousness" that pervaded Ian Fleming's godawful pulp books.
