Admittedly, struggling with alcohol abuse and dependency as I have in my adult life (I think this is true for a lot of people who wrote that show), I find the humor highly relatable (like what you said about your childhood and Bart VS Thanksgiving). And how every alcoholic is just a little different: Barney, Homer, KRUSTY, Mayor Quimby, Miss Hoover, Lionel Hutz, etc. And how most adults in Springfield enjoy getting drunk at times. For its time, that show violated some taboos when it came to showing people intoxicated on a sitcom. Especially for a cartoon.
Think of the situations. Homer is bored to tears when he is sober at a softball game. I always thought baseball was a boring sport all my life. He doesn't know what to do with his free time, so he attends a TUPPERWARE meeting hosted by Patty and Selma.
