The original FULL retirement age was 65 when Social Security was implemented in 1935.
It's been raised before, obviously. My full retirement age was 67. Oh, the horror.
Why was it raised before?

"The increase was a response to rising life expectancy and a shrinking worker-to-beneficiary ratio. Essentially, people were living longer and drawing benefits for more years, while fewer workers were contributing to the system."
