Colorado lawmakers return to the Capitol this week to deal with two issues presented by Gov. Jared Polis when he called them into special session. The first is how to resolve the $783 million state budget shortfall, and, in general, when the special session convenes on Thursday, the Democrats, who hold the legislative majority, are aligned on how to fix the budget hole. For the second issue, how to amend the state’s first-in-the-nation AI regulations, there is virtually no agreement. Lawmakers are preparing four bills to amend the AI regulations, with two of the new bills, each backed primarily by Democrats, the most likely to advance. However, the aim of each bill is largely counter to the other. One bill is accused of doing too much and implementing unworkable rules. The other is criticized for doing too little to protect consumers and to regulate a burgeoning, as well as affluent, industry.
