Talk to those that came here fleeing Castro's Cuba, or from the Nazis, or any other dictatorship. It does not matter the system, dictatorships follow the same pattern. Divide the people, start blaming a minority, accuse them, make people fear and hate them, get the people used to mistreating them, then spread the blame to other groups. Use the police and military to enforce the party rule, outlaw any that disagree no matter how small the disagreement.

Once a dictator gets the control and power he gets where everyone becomes the enemy that must be even more controlled or killed. In history, all too often, Republics descend into dictatorships. It can take a long time and much bloodshed on all sides to end a dictatorship.
