While the Norse discovery (and even settlement) of North America predated Columbus by centuries, it was not common knowledge in most of Europe and the settlement was abandoned c. 350 years before Columbus' voyages. Few (if any) resource-gathering trips seem to have occurred after that abandonment. Columbus' discoveries occurred when Europe was in a much better position to make use of that information that it was when Erikson made the initial European discovery.
