Legally-permitted persons (that is, US citizens and green card holder immigrants with no disqualifying issues on their record) have the right to arm themselves. While I only recommend this to people willing to learn how to safely and effectively handle firearms, to practice regularly to keep those skills current, and to properly secure their weapons, that option remains a fundamental right.

One of the reasons that right is constitutionally protected is ensuring that citizens have at least some last-ditch recourse against an overreaching, potentially totalitarian government. Obviously there's considerable (and vociferous) debate as to whether that scenario is unfolding in the US. But that's a separate, if related, matter...
