Donald Trump articles of impeachment update announced in Congress
Story by Kate Plummer
Texas Democrat Al Green has given an update about the articles of impeachment he plans to file against President Donald Trump in Congress.
Green said he was “moving to bring impeachment again” against Trump. He said that it will be clear why he is making the move when the articles are filed but that it was partly because Trump “doesn’t respect the separation of powers” by speaking against members of the House who do not agree with him.
“I will bringing articles of impeachment,” he said. “I will be doing what I believe is right to protect the republic.”
Newsweek reached out to the White House and Green by email to comment on this story outside of normal business hours.
Why It Matters
Trump was impeached twice during his first stint in the White House, but was acquitted by the U.S. Senate in both cases. Given that Republicans hold a majority in the House of Representatives, it is unlikely that an impeachment effort would be successful, but efforts to remove Trump may damage his reputation and standing with his Republican colleagues.
What To Know
Speaking on the House floor, Green quoted the late Republican Vice President Dick Cheney who had called Trump a “threat to our republic” over his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
Green called Trump “the intimidator in chief” and claimed he makes things difficult for members of the House of Representatives who disagree with him.
“He doesn’t believe in separation of powers, he disrespects the House and the Senate, the members who don’t give him what he desires, he is also a person who thinks that he can literally do whatever he pleases” he said.
He added that he “incited the insurrection” on January 6, 2021, when Trump supporters stormed the government building to protest his election loss to Joe Biden.
Following his reelection, Trump pardoned more than 1,500 people and commuted 14 people’s sentences who participated in the Capitol riots. Green criticized pardoning them and said he believed similar riots could happen again.
“I believe that he will find great difficulty in stepping down from office,” he said.
Green’s speech came after he announced in November he would file articles of impeachment against Trump by Christmas. Speaking in Washington, D.C., he told supporters he would introduce the measures as a privileged motion.
“There will be articles of impeachment filed before the Christmas break, this I will pledge to you,” Green said.
He previously introduced articles of impeachment against Trump in May, claiming he was “unfit to be president.”
Meanwhile, in April, Representative Shri Thanedar introduced seven articles of impeachment against Trump for several reasons, including Trump’s use of the Department of Government Efficiency and Trump’s implementation of “damaging tariffs” on the U.S.’s trading partners.
Mark Shanahan, who teaches American politics at the University of Surrey in the U.K. told Newsweek: “The Texas Democrat Al Green aims to ruin Donald Trump’s Christmas by filing articles of impeachment before the break for the holidays. In reality, with a GOP majority in the House, the impeachment attempt is doomed to failure and is more performative than posing a real threat to the president. This is more about testing the grit of the Democrats in the House. It’s about seeing whether the leadership is up for the fight as we head into 2026 and what is a crucial year for both parties in Congress.”
Representative Al Green of Texas told Newsweek in May: “I am Al Green, an unbought, unbossed, unafraid, liberated Democrat. I will speak truth to power, which is pretty easy to do. You simply say, ‘Power, we have a problem. Let’s solve it. I will do that, but I’ll also speak truth about power and say, power, we have a problem, and you’re it.'”
President Donald Trump at a rally in April addressed previous articles of impeachment introduced against him, saying: “Today they did it again. Some guy that I’ve never heard of…is he a congressman? This guy, he said…’ladies and gentlemen, I am going to start the impeachment of Donald Trump.’ What the hell did I do? Here we go again.”
What Happens Next
Green has said he will file articles of impeachment before Christmas. “Vote your conscience,” he told lawmakers.
