Yes, there was an arrest warrant out for Maduro. And if the military was deployed to protect and defend those executing the arrest warrant, the action likely falls within the president’s inherent authority under Article II of the Constitution to protect U.S. personnel from an actual or imminent attack.

But now what? The same regime is still in charge. Because of Maduro and his embrace of the “warmth of collectivism” the Venezuelan oil industry is lacking capital and infrastructure to maximize the economic efficiencies of a viable oil business.

Trump says he is “in charge” of running a sovereign foreign government. That doesn’t seem logical, feasible, or even legal at this point. This is how forever wars generally start out.
