The guy's popularity is off the charts. I don't know his stuff (not a genre that spends time in my musical wheelhouse), but he's massive, worldwide.

Figure skating (and in particular ice dancing, and that's sad because it's lovely) isn't a particularly high profile sport these days. For many, it's become one of those "watch every four years at the Olympics" sports, with viewership of even World Championships being pretty modest. A lot of folks (myself included) shy away from subjectively-judged sports, with this fiasco clearly showing why.
