I don't think most consumers consider factors like inadequate electrical infrastructure, environmental impact, etc.

I think they simply don't want to potentially screw up on a major purchase when they know IC works comfortably and reliably for their needs.

As much as I love gadgets, I choose to remain in IC camp. Why? I have 4 ICs ranging in age from 7.5 years to 26 years, and they are all in prime operating and aesthetic condition. I don't see anything I like better. The 2018 Cadillac XT5 defies all odds ... no mechanical, paint or interior issues after 55,000 miles, so no need to buy a new one. I would rather spend the money on nice vacations.
