A former FBI informant, Alexander Smirnov, was sentenced to six years in federal prison in January 2025 for fabricating a story about President Joe Biden and his son Hunter receiving $5 million bribes each from a Ukrainian energy company.

Smirnov, a dual U.S. and Israeli citizen and a longtime confidential source for the FBI, pleaded guilty in December 2024 to lying to the FBI and to a separate tax evasion charge. He had made the false claims in 2020 out of a stated "bias" against Joe Biden's presidential candidacy, attempting to interfere in the election
