We are an elite market who appreciate the finer things in life and who have choices. I actually chose to "overpay" for that bracelet because I could. Its value has performed as well as the DJIA, and it has been far more enjoyable than some boring mutual fund.

Of course, I haven't invested all my money in Tiffany and Cartier jewelry. But that which I did has resulted in DJIA-comparable returns, and there's a vast aftermarket out there that has supported the growth in value: eBay, Jomashop, Relux, 1stDibs, Poshmark, and dozens of others.

Now, on the other hand, your diamond that you bought from the backroom huxster in Chicago is probably worth less than you paid for it.
