Just hours after the U.S.-Iran memorandum appeared headed for formal signing, Hezbollah attacked Israeli forces in southern Lebanon, killing four soldiers and wounding 12 more. Israel responded with airstrikes, and Iran immediately threatened the future of the deal.
The irony is hard to miss: after distancing itself from Israel and negotiating directly with Iran, the US now finds that the success of its agreement may depend on Israel’s willingness to go along with terms it never negotiated, wasn't even mentioned in by name, and never accepted. Iran appears to believe the deal requires Israeli concessions in Lebanon. Israel does not consider itself bound by it. Last night’s events exposed the first major crack in the agreement.
