After much reflection, I have decided to resign from my position as Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, effective today.

I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran. Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby.

I support the values and the foreign policies that you campaigned on in 2016, 2020, 2024, which you enacted in your first term. Until June of 2025, you understood that the wars in the Middle East were a trap that robbed America of the precious lives of our patriots and depleted the wealth and prosperity of our nation.

In your first administration, you understood better than any modern President how to decisively apply military power without getting us drawn into never-ending wars. You demonstrated this by killing Qasam Solamani and by defeating ISIS.

Early in this administration, high-ranking Israeli officials and influential members of the American media deployed a misinformation campaign that wholly undermined your America First platform and sowed pro-war sentiments to encourage a war with Iran. This echo chamber was used to deceive you into believing that Iran posed an imminent threat to the United States, and that should you strike now, there was a clear path to a swift victory. This was a lie and is the same tactic the Israelis used to draw us into the disastrous Iraq war that cost our nation the lives of thousands of our best men and women. We cannot make this mistake again.

As a veteran who deployed to combat 11 times and as a Gold Star husband who lost my beloved wife Shannon in a war manufactured by Israel, I cannot support sending the next generation off to fight and die in a war that serves no benefit to the American people nor justifies the cost of American lives.

I pray that you will reflect upon what we are doing in Iran, and who we are doing it for. The time for bold action is now. You can reverse course and chart a new path for our nation, or you can allow us to slip further toward decline and chaos. You hold the cards.

It was an honor to serve in your administration and to serve our great nation.

That's the most important part of that guy's statement, really. A person with as much access to the relevant intelligence data as literally anyone on the planet (and with a history of loyal support of this administration, so little if any chance of political motivation to lie) explicitly stated that this was not an "imminent threat."

If the threat is not legitimately imminent, I'd argue that a war that's causing bloodshed, ruining decades-long alliances, costing billions daily, and engendering massive negative ramifications to the global economy is not in fact (immediately) "necessary."

Among other dubious rationales, this was an attempt at producing a "rally 'round the flag" effect for this administration, and it's failed miserably at that.

We were told less than a year ago that Iran's nuclear abilities were totally gone. So what happened in that short time?

Most certainly Iran has rare earth metals and oil, which is attractive, but nothing to start bombing over.

This feels like an extension of bombing boats without any proof they were carrying drugs. 143 dead, still no forthcoming proof. There are also reports that these strikes have endangered and killed civilians. Colombian President Gustavo Petro accused the U.S. of murdering a Colombian fisherman with no ties to drug smuggling in a September strike.

I keep feeling like Donald sits behind a map with his toy soldiers. For someone who never served, he certainly blusters a lot, and often negatively, about our veterans and in-duty personnel.

That bluster (for which Hegseth is a channel) is galling.

This is a person with enormous expertise and access to information and who has been a staunch Trump loyalist for years. That he explicitly stated that Iran was NOT an "imminent threat," in direct contradiction to the Kushner-derived (apparently) primary rationale for war, is massive for any objective person.

Best strategy is not to wait until an enemy becomes an imminent threat.

We haven't the surplus, in blood or treasure, to eliminate every potentially significant threat at once. Certainly not the latter commodity, particularly when the direct cost (how many billion is it now?) pales into insignificance compared to the overall global economic damage looming from the closure of the Strait. And certainly not with a poorly-planned "first strike" made w/o consultation with our allies (except Israel, of course) that has left us with only a single ally in the operation.

No sane person would miss Iran's current repressive, terror-exporting regime. But that regime's still "current," still dangerous enough to continue interdicting shipping at a critical choke point, and is probably far more committed to continue resisting than it was before. It's proven to be a very resilient "hydra" when it comes to using decapitation strikes. I don't see any plausible path to regime change there that doesn't include massive "boots on the ground" numbers, something we can't really afford right now, which would have severe ramifications to our readiness in other parts of the world (against vastly more capable potential enemies), and which the majority of Americans don't support.

This is looking to be an absolutely disastrous decision, to be frank.

Also important is his naming Israel as the real motivator behind the attack.
