Last month, Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham ignited a furious debate about whether or not transgender women have a place in women's sports. Since then, Cunningham has received a lot of pushback.
During Saturday night's game against the New York Liberty, the Barclays Center video board showed a message that seemed to be in direct opposition to Cunningham's stance. Now, one right-wing commentator has taken notice and he's not happy about WNBA teams deciding to "taunt" Cunningham.
Sophie Cunningham's Comments
During an interview for the ESPN profile that was published last month, Cunningham was asked about her political views, including the "MAGA Barbie" nickname that she has recently been given, and she openly shared her controversial stance on transgender athletes.
"I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I'm like, 'I never once said that,'" she told ESPN. "I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn't have to go against biological men."
Cunningham later doubled down on her comments, describing her views as "common sense."
"I said what I said. I think it's kind of common sense," Cunningham said last month. "And I think I'll always believe in that. I think it's really important to protect children, and that's little girls who are also involved in that category. I stand on what I said."
Cunningham has made it clear since then that she has no plans to back away from the backlash surrounding her comments. However, she has also indicated that she would like to turn her attention back toward basketball.
Opponents 'Taunt' Cunningham
Over the past several weeks, Cunningham has received a lot of pushback from fans and media as well as some opposing players and coaches, both directly and indirectly.
Cunningham has been loudly booed by fans on a number of occasions, and opposing teams have consistently used the video board to express their opposition to her stance. Over the past several weeks, fans could be seen on the video board waving transgender pride flags and LGBTQ pride flags while wearing pro-trans shirts and holding pro-trans signs.
It's been a pretty intentional opposition to Cunningham and her stance, and right-wing commentator Jon Root of OutKick took notice.
"WNBA teams have gone out of their way to taunt Sophie Cunningham since she took her common sense stand to protect women's sports & spaces. They've shown trans flags, shirts, & overt pro-trans messaging on the video board…" Root wrote in a post on X. "This is unacceptable"
Root shared a photo of a message at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Saturday night that read, "Hey trans fans! We're glad you're here! Go Liberty!"
Obviously, none of these messages mention Cunningham by name, but the intent is loud and clear.
