First of all the original film just happened to fit my own imaginations vision as I read the book for the first time. In other words what they filmed was very close to how I visualized the setting.
I'm a man out of my time, no doubt because the current film seems a scruffy, shabby rendition of what should be space opera in all its flamboyant glory and De Laurentis really got that look and feel dead right - in my opinion.
The current film lead actor does NOT resemble a duke's son in behaviour or appearance whereas in the old film the actor has exactly the right arrogance and look to fit the part.
Why change the gender of the planetary ecologist when the book states he's male? What kind of lame PCness excuses that substitution?
I could go on point by point through the whole thing but I guess it all comes down to ones own view of the story and theres no right or wrong way to see that, it is what it is - to you (or me).
