Because I left out my parents playing classical and how my father liked music hall songs and my mother, like yours, was a cultural snob. However they both liked musicals like 'Salad Days' and 'My Fair Lady'and really if left to his own devices Dad would have always succeeded in business but never have acquired the polish that Mum insisted on drumming into him.
Also I left out the influence of being in the choir and music lessons in school which taught me to recognize the sound of instruments in a musical composition and the structure behind melodies.
I also liked classical music, not all forms or composers but more than most kids of my age.
Last but not least I had to shortcut the musical influences because to unwind how it developed is/was as much to do with who I was with, so for example I got 'The Stomp' mainly from raucous parties at the Sailing Club (which I only belonged to so I could drink underage!)
Also my first years of primary ed were at a private boarding prep school from 8 - 11 and music was whatever they let you hear or tried to teach you like that bloody recorder which I hate to this day, useless piece of crap.
Grammar school was still a bit restrictive because the oiks aren't able to attend so we little snobs were mainly blissfully ignorant of popular culture as the secondary modern kids got.
