The pirate radio ships were an important element of the youthful rebellion against the Establishment.
Breaking the BBC/GPO monopoly of broadcasting was an important step in the right direction. They (the pirates) may 'only have been in it for the money' - of course they were - but they finally shattered the goody two shoes censorship which was political more than cultural.
John Peel on Radio London and Kenny Everett were my two favourite DJ's.
