They were a diesel-hydraulic as opposed to diesel-electric unit and sadly weren't the best of engines in service, a lot of it down to government politics insisting on UK deigned hydraulic power plants over purchasing superior foreign types. Also a bit slow for top link running, so nice to see and hear but not one of Britain's finest moments locomotive wise.
