If the mediator was a human being it might have given a deep and heart felt sigh. It did so nevertheless in its own equivalent of feeling how helpless, ignorant, naive and innocent these creatures were and yet at the same time, how dangerous.
As a being it existed in several planes when necessary thus allowing it to communicate with its masters whilst being focused on the subjects under scrutiny. This facility allowed it to reach a balance between often opposing directives.
Charles brain was still functioning because this particular species could not be safely kept undamaged within the stasis field unless able to believe they were still functioning in their familiar surroundings.
The entity recognized as Command had no interest in species individual peculiarities. All it was waiting for was a positive or negative conclusion to this aberration so that the matter could be appropriately finished. It did not want to deal with incomplete programs.
So it issued regular queries directed to the beings that the mediator considered as its masters. If this aberrant matter wasn't completed to its, Commands, satisfaction within a predetermined number of decision cycles, then it would probably make matters worse by a draconian decision such as erasing the source of the problem so thoroughly that nothing remained of the entire group of beings and their habitation.
Command was a mechanical form of intelligence deliberately built to make decisions unsullied by any emotional values. The Masters, tasked with doing the messy work that sometimes arose when dealing with sentient animals had in their turn created the mediators to isolate themselves from unpleasantness.
As far as Charles was concerned he was still in his bedroom writing and drawing the ideas that he hoped would eventually lead to a working model of his interstellar drive. Using time dilation the mediator was able to convince Charles that his ideas were new and exciting as he lived through his past experiences like a rewound movie.
Maybe, it thought, I can find out what he had done in the laboratory, but it wasn't a coherent linear flow of memories the mediator was able to view.....
(Charles thoughts) What a load of bollocks about physics! You can't take the Physics class because your mathematics isn't good enough! What about Michael Faraday then? Look at what he discovered, how meticulous his notebooks were in recording his observations,,,,,I wonder if magnetism is the way to go,,,,dads got all those old electromagnetic field generators I could borrow some of them.
String theory and all that Schrodingers cat guff, why can't anyone see that they're all just ways of looking at the same phenomenon. Everything vibrates at the molecular level so it stands to reason that particles cannot travel in straight lines they must be following sine wave paths except that the frequency is so high the vibrations are indiscernible. Still its enough for making it impossible to pin a particle down exactly. Try telling that to these silly old buggers like Einstein....
I remember those magnets I had and the way their fields interacted. where's that book I had that spoke about diamagnetism? That was something Faraday - the one that had no maths remember - discovered or rather described and whats interesting is what it implies. If a permanent magnet can induce opposite polarity and therefore repuslion in a material then surely thats worth investigating further.
