"You hard of hearing boy?"
It WAS his old friend the dwarf from his previous adventures here in the land of the fey that the Barrier protected.
"GARM! I'm sorry but I just woke up and am still slightly mithered. You don't know how glad I am to see you, is the laundry machinery still working well? You don't happen to have anything to eat in your pouch, do you? I'm famished."
"We'll be at the village soon enough, don't you remember the way?"
"No, it all seems slightly changed in some way that I do not understand. How is your wife, how's Blase?"
"Blase! Don't mention her name in my wife's presence, she'll drown us in tears and deafen us with her screaming. Blase took off into the Deep Forest not long after you left, in fact I'm not even sure I should bring you home in case it starts Ma off again, so perhaps the Inn would be best until I've broken the news gentle like."
"I thought you said Blase had told you she'd seen me cross the barrier in her dreams?"
"Me? I said nothing of the sort! You sure you're alright yourself Tim? Perhaps the shock of crossing over has upset your thoughts a tad."
They trudged along each in his own thoughts, Garm worrying about the change in Tim and the lad equally concerned with his disjointed recollection of the recent past events.
Once they reached the village and went to the Inn there followed quite a riotous gathering as the dwarves who'd known him from before, welcomed him back. Glad though he was to be remembered so well, Tim was even happier to be given a sumptuous meal and dwarves don't stint on the food stuff at any time.
Eventually the party began to end as dwarves went home for their dinners and Garm faced the delicate job of telling his wife about Tims return.
Tired though he was from the walking and all the eating and drinking, Tim thought he'd take a look in his sketchbook quite forgetting how it was in fact his journal for technical notes. Only then did he realize what he'd brought with him, there was nothing that could be useful or of interest to the dwarves but, on the other hand, perhaps the elves might find it fascinating?
The odd machine was a puzzle, he had no recollection of having seen it before, but it did somehow seem to remind him of that strange buzzing, humming sound that was haunting him.
He had no idea that he'd possessed this machine before crossing over the barrier, nor that he'd intended to bring it to the Time Tower and see if the thing had any connection with elven magic.
