Re: A lucky man indeed - well, sort of
Mike, I have great empathy for all of that. For a long time, we here in north-central Maryland enjoyed a largely rural life, but the developers soon marketed the region as bedroom communities to the greater Baltimore-Washington metro. My graduating high school class was probably 70% farm kids and then the rest of us. Now I'm told it's 10% farm kids and then the rest. The transition has been rapid, although thankfully the EPA stepped in some 10-15 years ago to limit development somewhat as the geology here does not provide for a lot of ground-water. Still, many farms fell to the developers before that, paved over with cul-de-sacs and McMansions. The politics of it all is dreadful. If you exclude my college years and the 2-3 after I first married, I've lived in this county for 60+ years. A lot has changed, but there are still glimpses of what once was. To be honest, though, my working life was spent commuting to Baltimore and DC, so it's hard to be critical of those around me.
