1. Boy on the run from unspecified men he believes to be assassins.
2. Boy narrowly escapes them runs up a chine only to find its a dead end with a long drop. Notices barely visible crack in cliff wall and negotiates it to find himself inside a tunnel that brings him out inside a fortification.
3. He has found a way into a Barrier Gateway which he is informed about briefly by a voice that permits him to pass.
4. Flashback to explain how he is in this predicament. Made an orphan by parents murdered for unknown reason. Forced to live on the streets of the Citadel which is not kind to orphans.
5. Brief explanation of Brythan, the Citadel and how boy learns to survive by artistic skills and eventually finds himself in a cart where he had hidden for the night and fallen asleep.
6. Drover discovers stowaway but kindly takes him out into the country far from the Citadel and introduces him to the village of Brocks Barn in which there is a toymaker who takes him on as apprentice eventually gives him a cottage to live in.
7. Boy is befriended by wise woman (witch) and her husband (wizard) who further his education which is already above average thanks to circumstances and native intelligence legacy of original parenting.
8.Boy becomes journeyman sets off for nearby Hoddes Town hooping to set up his own toymaking business for he is particularly skilled with small mechaanisms and clockwork and sees a niche in the market he can fill.
9. On the way he must pass Gallows Hill where he sees a man suspended in an iron cage and frees him with lock picking experience gained in Citadel days.
10. In Hoddes Town he meets an existing toymaker who is trying to build a chronometer to satisfy a sea captain that the Guild of Clockmakers have failed to satisfy.
11. Peter - boys real name - succeeds in perfecting clock and delivers it to the customer who pays well for it.
12. Clockmakers Guild have put bailiffs onto his employer for clockmaking against Guild rules. Peter pays fine for his employers release using money from chronometer sale.
13. Guild is believed to be angry at this and directs the assassins to silence the boy. He is warned by Stiv Preem the man he rescued from the cage who is a member of the assasins guild and believes that there is no such official contract out on the boy but advises him to go away for a while until things are sorted out.
14. The real villain is Pontius Plant an ambitious courtier in the citadel who had killed peters parents because of jealousy at their honesty and popularity likely to make them favoured as royal advisors over Plant.
15. Plant had always known there was a son who had escaped his killers but had lost track of him, presumed dead like so many orphans. Word reaches him about the clockmakers guild and their desire to get rid of some clever boy whose drawings made the clock possible and he realizes that this must be the same boy he wants dead
16. He bribes an assassin to place a fake contract into the guild records and its this that alerts Stiv Preem who recognizes it as a false contract and must discover who placed it and eliminate them. Which he does and the council makes him chief assassin for uncovering a web of corruption in their ranks.
17. This brings us back to Peter with his journal/sketchbook who has entered the borderlands and is about to come friends of the dwarves by designing them a laundry machinery they can build thus relieving them of much drudgery.
