One cannot raise a son in the 21st century without being exposed to the entire lot of them, though I saw the original three long before offspring.
They were the only ones that were worthwhile, to me anyway. Good Saturday-afternoon-at-the-cinema space adventure yarns with lots of lasers and bad guys; no pretence at anything but.
Then came the next three with a completely sappy and slightly weird romance plotline dominating and quite frankly ruining the fun. They were just awful, and a perfect example of how a blatant attempt to appeal to everyone, rather than one demographic, so often makes the result not appealing to anyone.
After that, they just got worse if that was at all possible, straying further from the heroes and villains space film nostalgia and well into social lecturing; just vomit-ous blatant Hollywood believing it was their place to instruct me on the issues of the day and doing so at the expense of plot and character development. "Artificial" and "contrived" doesn't begin to describe it.
The fun of the first three is long gone.
