My current general practitioner runs a tight and cheerful ship, though my previous one was horrible. He (the previous) was independent of the corporations (that disguise themselves as university adjuncts for tax reasons) until he got gobbled up by the worst of them. After the take-over, they used his office to find homes for older jaded nurses as office staff, the ones that no-one else wanted around, apparently. They were the type who enjoyed wielding power especially over men, slow, rude, lazy, and sexist. I'm glad to be shot of them, even though the physician was quite good. Unfortunately, they controlled him, too.
The folks I use now are very pleasant, helpful, prompt, and prove you don't have to follow stereotype. Unfortunately, the system is geared to fobbing you off on a specialist as often as possible, more billable hours for them. Some are alright, but most seem to have this notion you as a patient are climbing the mount to worship them; dismissive, incredibly arrogant in perhaps deigning to see your peasant arse, and the wait times for an appointment are often months. It truly is a horror story of a system anymore and, because it is profit based (only in America!), its a national embarrassment. Blatant money gouging of its victims and, no, you are not a patient. You are a victim of this pack of hyenas.
Lately I've taken to walking out if they somehow can't see me within half-an-hour of my appointment time as a rule, and just not bothering with many of these when there seems to be no interest in improving my lot instead of having me on the hook as a long-term income stream. That principle has freed up quite a bit of time and is the only way to fight back (Yeah, "fight back". A health system that is by nature an adversary. What a great country.) I would prefer death over a life spent turning their wheel.
