2) So, it's replacement time. My prediction of the company as it has now evolved was pretty spot on, complete with the "We have a slot on Monday I'm desperate to fill, so I'll give you a special deal if you decide right now!" spiel I predicted here. After he was done with his quote that I was to agree with over a weekend, I told him we'd talk about it and call him back within the hour. Then, I called him back and told him I thought about it and intended to bid it out, so needed a proposal good for a week. He actually caved a bit and stuck with his price. Interesting.
3) Interestingly, they bid a system that is a generation down with respect to current efficiency regulation, no longer manufactured but existing stocks still legal to sell.
4) The people that more recently did my car shop bid the same system for substantially less, then bid a more efficient system that is in compliance with the current energy and environmental tier at a bit more, but still well under the company who had maintained the now obsolete one in the house, and it goes in tomorrow.
5) I also found it interesting that the first thing the guy from the winning company asked me was, "Do you guys need a couple portable A/C units to tide you over? I can load a few in my truck if you do." That says something.
I hope everything goes well tomorrow and my confidence in my decision is well placed.
