Why in the hell do males age 18 have to register for "selective service" (the "draft") in this country after almost half a century since the draft has been actually used?
Either update this socially anachronistic practice or eliminate it. In this day and age, men and women are equally allowed to serve in any military occupational speciality in the US, including the infantry and the other combat arms. So, why only males register at 18 anymore? Are we still so hopelessly patriarchal that we cannot stomach having our daughters drafted?
It is a slap in the face to anyone who believes the opportunities in the military are offered on a basis of equality when the responsibilities to society are not allocated on that same basis. I'd love to know why that is.
Otherwise, end the whole process for registration at 18 for everyone. This is a socially antiquated practice as it exists, a holdover from the 1970s and its social norms, and an opportunity for saving the taxpayer a buck or two by eliminating the infrastructure required to administer this whole thing.
