Those Marx mechanisms are rugged pieces of machinery and will give years of rough and tumble play value without breaking.
Toy trains and clockwork in particular, are ideal for imaginative forays for those not too tied to reality!
I preferred Hornby because of how it was made to be paired with Meccano. I used to make cranes and loaders and tippers, all sorts of lineside equipment and Lego wasn't around in my earliest days so I had to make do with cardboard structures.
Dad bought me a weird toy that was a sort of miniature brickwork - real brick - that you cemented with a paste that dissolved in water so you could use the bricks again but the stuff was a real pain to play with.
I fell back on the old favourite of those geometric wooden blocks that come in a variety of shapes, triangles, squares, columns etc.
