A very long time ago, when the world was young, it had been a giant snowball, completely covered in ice until some shift in the temperatures had finally started a massive meltdown which, in its turn, caused the oceans to rise.
Brythan emerged from its freezing shroud first as a peninsula and then when the glaciers and meltwater started to have an effect, it gradually became disconnected from the continental landmass, separated by a channel of water that connected two oceans.
The continental landmass having thawed out in its turn and somewhat ahead of the newly formed offshore island was the first to become populated by a group of hominids which evolved into separate species under the influence of a new comer, humanity, that were stronger and more ruthless apex predators the effect of which was to drive the latter into hiding.
Thus it was that the fey came into existence recognisably as elves, dwarves, and brownies who chose remote and specialised habitats that kept them away from the brutal humans which hunted them as food, though there were some exceptions such as the brownies who hid in plain sight by becoming unobtrusive.
The elves were the first to discover Brythan as they named the newly formed island and using their superior intellect and magical gifts, formed the Barrier that made the northern end of Brythan an exclusive preserve for the fey, which use those skills that are labelled 'magic', an imprecise term but universally understood to mean a power of some sort, humans meaning those who cannot use magic, cannot pass the Barrier but are unaware of its existence, simply finding it repellant without ever really understanding why.
Eventually the Barrier land would grow into a separate existence but even so despite population pressure no one wanted to go there which was aided by what seemed to be a foul micro climate of almost perpetual rain, snow, sleet and generally low temperatures accompanied by gale force winds.
