Some kind of credit vehicle is really going to be necessary, I believe. Otherwise a farmer can only barter at harvest, rather than anytime a need arises for a service or supply. Really, that was the original purpose for money or some other substance one could exchange for at harvest (for example) and "cash in" for a pint in July or a horse-shoeing in March, let alone a tool for a toymaker or a good assassination. If there is to be a merchant class, that adds another level of sophistication to some sort of commerce based far beyond simple barter.
At least, my mind goes there pretty quickly. As to the rest of it, like I said, I gotta think...
