Likewise, I read a book in the late '80s that rather scared me to death, written by an erstwhile uninteresting mystery author named Lawrence Sanders, at the behest of a lover at the time. She devoured everything he wrote and wanted me to share in her enthusiasm. Not being a fiction reader except for very selective things, I wasn't enthused.
She handed me "The Tomorrow File". I read it and it was a frightening picture of a pretty ethically bankrupt and powerful American dystopia. In 1980 it was bizarre and distant. Today its much more immediate.
Not a great book perhaps but it will scare the piss out of you.
