...as we were a couple threads down, this is the sort of thing I see and can photograph. I photographed this exchange yesterday.
Grrr, as the undisputed Head of Pride, has a quiet (quiet enough so you'd miss it if you weren't paying attention) word with Caledonia over some transgression or another.
I wonder if it might have been in regard to Cal'y and her behaviour toward Lucy the Micro-panther. I say that only because today saw Cal'y far more civil towards Lucy (who is at the bottom of the hierarchy, being the newest arrival and the youngest).
Anyway, the postures are telling. Grrr is in the superior; standing with her body, especially head, higher than Caledonia, who is in the inferior, lying down and attentive, though by head posture not submissive.
Grrr, unsatisfied by Cal'ys mild defiance, then kicks it up a notch. She turns sideways and moves in a step or two, bringing her head down a bit more to eye-ball level, at which point Caledonia pulls her head in and down. She may not necessarily agree but she won't challenge.
Grrr is in charge of this exchange as is her right. Not a sound is exchanged; a growl or, worse, a hiss would be a challenge.
I can't but guess about the actual subject, but the social positions are clear.
