Mine is designed to be precisely that, then developed a little further. Essentially I've built a couple to the UK layout design norm of the "single scene shunter" and attached them to a yard diorama that serves as the car/wagon source to create the entire layout.

Still a point-to-point layout, but a very different design philosophy from the usual space intensive American layout design norm, theirs not being anywhere near as space-constrained as in UK practice.
