My visual goal here is for everything to blend rather than pushing, say, heavily albeit accurately weathered stock or a slavish adherence to a particular locality with the scenery.

I want that very reaction you write of, where the entirety is visually balanced and nothing jumps out as being jarringly out of visual proportion whether (on the one extreme) too "showcased" or (on the other) missing entirely.

That blend and balance is actually trickier than it sounds.
