When I was the constituency rep for the US in a UK based model railway organisation, I was required to keep abreast of the UK privacy laws given the internet presence of the organisation, so have just enough knowledge of the differences to be dangerous. One thing I did learn was it is a very dynamic field in the UK, both for matters of privacy and the mitigation of abuse (a hot topic in the world of sport recently).
It's very different here. The tech-bro oligarchs are very much against anything of the sort, for the ability to be anonymously abusive (to the point of suicide or murder) keeps 'em coming back for more. Every news item about a confused kid taking his or her life is money in their pockets, so anarchy in the name of "free speech" is the order of the day. Just despicable and another reason to be embarrassed.
I very well could be wrong thinking you have that box and we don't as an international difference, but that's my first guess. If so, though, it makes your lot more civilised by far, and mine even more of a shameful embarrassment.
