Although I used to enjoy the Toad stories, the wellspring of inspiration dried up when I stopped riding motorbikes. Stands to reason doesn't it.
I've tried to revive the source via YouTube but its not the same. Although the videos of people like Stuart and Kate riding did help a bit they cannot replace the physical input and experience with hazards that originally triggered my RFC fantasy.
However the rambling episodes about the young man who is orphaned and has to make his own way across a magical landscape became my preferred inspiration because it was largely based upon my own journeys albeit vaguely though theres more truth to the tale than one might suppose or believe.
The seed was my wondering whether or not there might be some truth that gave rise to myths and legends about fey folk such as, but not limited to, elves, dwarves, brownies, piskies and so forth.
These magical beings were forced into reclusion and near extinction by the brutish hominids that preceded even Neanderthals and our own species and when the melting ice sheets gave the rise in sea level that doomed Doggerland, it created an island that was almost bare of sentient life.
This made a safe refuge for the fey folk who used their 'magical' (or scientific - see Arthur C Clarke) powers to create a temporal and spatial barrier protecting the inhospitable North end of the island rendering them safe and invisible.
