Over here we have these bugs called cicadas. The eggs and larvae live underground for a seriously long period, seven years for some and eleven for others if memory serves, then emerge all at once in a great hoard of very benign albeit pretty large fat aerodynamically unsound insects whose collective mating call is deafening. It's an impressive display of nature.

Anyway, a cohort of these things had emerged one year and I was out and about (a 650 Bonney) when a cicada rose in what passed for flight (they really were quite awful fliers) from a roadside ditching. I don't know why but I just knew when I saw him that I was going to wear the little bastard.

I did, too. Right in the centre of my forehead and he hurt! I looked like a weird sort of cyclops for several days and took to wearing a full face-shield helmet from then on.
