Suffice to say that journey was not one of satisfaction or comfort, and I do feel at a loss to reconcile my desire to discover a comfort rather than more questions and more disappointments. Maybe some day...
Anyway, that is not to say I've come away emptyhanded, for I have not. I'm happy enough with some concepts that run consistent through the majority of Western religions, very often rooted in the pre-Christian religions such as found in the British Isles, the Germanic world, the American indigenous cultures, yes even the classic multi-theism of the Romans and Greeks.
These concepts are common throughout, and really are expressions of man's relationship with his environment. In autumn there are the harvest festivals (such as Thanksgiving to the Yanks, a harvest festival gone secular) in which the underlying theme is Gratitude.
During the winter Solstice, the Northern cultures mark that shortest day in the depth of winter with celebrations of New Beginnings. Christmas for the Christians is such a time, Lights on the face of and defeating Darkness, again a common theme.
Sometime around the Equinox, as the countryside turns green, the blossoms show themselves, there are again festivals of a common theme; Hope. Easter is intended as an expression and story of Hope.
We all need it. The world as it is this day can very well use it, and it might seem farther away and fainter than ever, especially with the actions of the powerful, the vindictive, the ruthless, the vengeful. We personally need hope, to deal with our personal travails and pains and we collectively need it to one day make progress again as a society, a culture, a species.
On this Easter, my wish to you all is this. May all here know and be lifted by Hope.
