Truth be told, I have not found Lucas to be the great mystery that the body of humour would suggest, not in a lifetime of British cars and a bike or two. Problems only seem to arrive when the car has been allowed to sit for long periods, something mine usually don't do.
If I have any bitch about them, it's those dam bullet-connectors they used. They are prone to corrosion if they sit, especially if they sit in un-heated spaces.
My current crop are quite reliable when driven regularly. Even sitting a month doesn't bother them, though sitting over the winter can require a little bit of sorting.
For perspective, I've just finished waking up a comparatively modern Subaru that sat for a year, and it required its share of sorting and troubleshooting as one would expect, though not as one would believe given the mythology. Quite simply, cars like to be driven. They don't like to sit unused.
Oddly, I've had more issues with Bosch than Lucas, though both are more reliable than Delco. Truly and typically it is the Americans who excel at bottling both darkness and silence and selling the result as commodities.
