Some years ago, Congress established the "America 250" foundation to coordinate and grant for the 250th in much the same way the Bicentennial Commission did for the 200th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Trump ignored that foundation and came up with his own brand, "Freedom 250" by his usual executive order methodology. By so doing he purposely destroyed any notion there would be an interest in national unity for this event, in stark contrast to the Bicentennial, which occurred in a time of similar disquiet and economic upheaval yet provided a celebration that everyone could join as a break from the malaise of the times.
The result is a lack of support for the original foundation, a lack of unified effort and funding, just another disorganised politically divided partisan cluster-f***. This weekend he actually said of his events, "Only Great Patriots invited". I take that to mean the rest of the population of Americans who don't pray at his alter and that of his billionaire class are excluded from the celebrations.
Now that I have been informed by our president that I am not welcome, I've taken my America 250 flag down since the foundation's resources have apparently been syphoned off and its continued display could bring partisan violence down upon me, and have flicked it in as far as participating in the occasion. My heart isn't in it. He's even taken this from us.
I fear the division first wrought by Newt Gingrich and his Tea Party, then MAGA, and on to Trump in his true colours despoiling the nation for his class, is now permanent. I have to wonder if new Declarations of Independence are forthcoming in my lifetime, for I can't help but feel the population is so acrimoniously polarised as to be beyond reconciliation. Do I, as only an individual unrepresented citizen, have no choice but to give up?
