wool, wealth, breugel and so on...

its our anniversary tomorrow so i have been reminiscing about my youth to tammy when i played hooky from school to explore the town of hertford which is redolent with historical connections.

it all started when i mentioned 'bread sauce' and was amazed she had never heard of it which led me to explain wartime solutions to cooking substitutes, cos winston made sure we had adequate supplies of bread and beer.

that in turn led to my explaining how german bombers dumped bombs as they fled and so our countryside had bomb craters in the local woods and unfortunately destroyed some medieval cottages and the local watermill.

this in turn led to my explaining about the rich wheat harvests, the cost of transporting wheat and beer and the rise of the canal system. of course then i had to backtrack to the tudors, the wealth of the wool trade, the woolsack, the guilds, the cinque ports, and pictures that preserve memories of the mini ice age - hence bruegel.

this was just an overview which made tammy insist i write it all down only more coherently and the problem is that my handicaps make this a difficult task so you must forgive me for this but its my best for now.
